How the No-Claims Step Works and How to Protect It
⏱ 2 min read
The no-claims step is the discount level earned for each year completed without an at-fault claim. The higher the step, the lower the premium; an at-fault claim moves it back and raises future premiums.
How it rises
Complete the policy year without an at-fault claim. Continuity matters — long uninsured gaps can affect the earned discount.
When it falls
Only claims where you are at fault and a payment is made reduce the step. If the other party is fully at fault, your step is preserved.
Should you claim for small damage?
Do the arithmetic: if the repair cost is lower than the additional premium you would pay over the coming years, it is cheaper not to open a file. In stop-start city traffic, where minor contact damage is common, this calculation arises frequently.
Changing vehicles
The discount is generally attached to the person and can move to a new vehicle in the same class. If a sold vehicle’s policy is not updated correctly, the next owner’s accidents can appear in your record.
Frequently asked questions
Does my step fall if the other driver is at fault?
No. Only your own at-fault claims with a payment affect the step.
Do I lose my discount when I change cars?
Usually not; the discount follows the person and can transfer to a new vehicle in the same class.
