In accidents with material damage only and no injuries, drivers who agree on the facts may complete a joint accident report without calling the police. This document is the foundation of the claim file, and gaps in it cause most delays.
Before you write
Move the vehicles to a safe place and place a warning triangle — but photograph the scene first. On busy arteries, a quick photo followed by clearing the lane is the safest sequence.
The report must include
- Plate, make and model of both vehicles, and the registered owner’s name
- Driver licence details
- Insurer and policy number
- Location, date and time
- A sketch showing the direction of impact
- Signatures of both parties
