Motor Claim Process: Documents and Steps

⏱ 2 min read

In compulsory traffic insurance, the damaged party claims from the other driver’s insurer. Handled properly the process is quick; missing documents are the usual reason for delay.

Required documents

  • Joint accident report or police accident report
  • Copy of vehicle registration and driving licence
  • Damage photographs
  • Bank account details (IBAN)
  • For company-owned vehicles: tax certificate and signature circular

Loss adjuster

The insurer appoints an adjuster who inspects the vehicle, itemises the repair and reports back. Repairing at a contracted garage reduces disputes about parts and labour.

Repair or cash settlement

Either the contracted garage is paid directly, or the assessed amount is transferred to you. With a cash settlement, remember that actual repair costs may exceed the assessment.

Diminished value

The not-at-fault party can claim for the drop in market value after repair. This is assessed separately, based on vehicle age, mileage and the extent of damage.

Frequently asked questions

How long does payment take?

With complete documents and a finished adjuster report, usually a few working weeks. Missing paperwork is the main delay.

How do I claim diminished value?

The not-at-fault party files a separate request with the at-fault party’s insurer; vehicle age, mileage and damage extent determine the amount.
