What is compulsory traffic insurance?
Compulsory motor third-party liability insurance — known in Türkiye as trafik sigortası — is required by the Highway Traffic Law No. 2918 for every motor vehicle on the road.
If your vehicle is involved in an accident, it covers the other party’s material damage as well as bodily injury, disability and death, up to the legal limits stated in your policy.
What is covered and what is not
Covered:
- Damage to third parties’ vehicles and property
- Third parties’ medical costs, disability and death compensation
Not covered:
- Damage to your own vehicle — this requires comprehensive motor insurance (kasko)
- Losses above the legal limits — you can increase protection with optional excess liability cover (İMM)
The coverage limits are updated every year by the authorities. We check the current limits in your policy with you when preparing the quote.
How is the price determined?
The main factors are the type of use (car, van, taxi, etc.), the registered owner’s claims history (no-claims level) and the province where the vehicle is registered. Claim-free years lead to a discount; years in which the insurer paid for damage you caused lead to an increase. Traffic insurance tariffs are regulated; we prepare the current quote for your vehicle and go through the cover with you.
What we need for a quote
- The registered owner’s Turkish ID number (tax number for company vehicles); foreign residents can use their foreign resident ID number
- Licence plate number
- Vehicle registration certificate (ruhsat) serial and document number
- Expiry date of your current policy, if any

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between traffic insurance and kasko?
Traffic insurance is compulsory and only covers damage you cause to others. Kasko (comprehensive motor insurance) is optional and covers damage to your own vehicle according to the policy terms.
How does the no-claims discount work?
Each claim-free policy period moves you up a no-claims level and reduces the premium. Periods in which the insurer paid for damage you caused move you down.
Is my Turkish traffic insurance valid abroad?
No. If you drive abroad, you need Green Card insurance that is valid in the countries you visit.
