Compulsory traffic insurance (motor third-party liability) covers damage the insured vehicle causes to others. It is mandatory for every motor vehicle on the road in Türkiye.
What it covers
- Material damage to the other vehicle and property
- Bodily injury to third parties: treatment, permanent disability, loss of support
- Legal defence within the scope of the policy
What it does not cover
Damage to your own vehicle, your own bodily injury as driver (a separate personal accident benefit), accidents under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving without a valid licence and intentional acts.
Limits
Limits are set by an annually published tariff and vary by vehicle type. If damages exceed the limit, the balance may be claimed from the vehicle owner. Optional excess liability cover (İMM) raises that ceiling.
Difference from casco
Traffic insurance protects others; casco protects your own vehicle. They complement each other rather than compete.
Renewal and penalties
An expired policy leaves the vehicle uninsured: an administrative fine applies at roadside checks and you bear personal liability for damage caused.
