In a comprehensive claim you can either have the car repaired at a contracted garage or take the assessed amount in cash. Which is better depends on the situation.

Contracted garage

Advantages: no dispute over parts and labour, direct payment to the garage, workmanship guarantee. Disadvantage: waiting time depending on workload.

Cash settlement

Advantages: repair wherever you prefer, or keep the money for minor damage. Disadvantages: if the real cost exceeds the assessment the difference is yours, and some policies apply a deduction to cash settlements.

Vehicles under warranty

Repairs outside the authorised network can affect the manufacturer warranty. For such vehicles, an authorised contracted garage is the safer route.

Original versus equivalent parts

Unless the policy includes an original-parts benefit, equivalent parts may be used. On newer vehicles this affects both value and warranty — ask when quoting.
