Green Card Valid Countries and the Transit Trap
⏱ 2 min read
The country codes printed on a Green Card show where cover applies; excluded countries appear struck through. The most frequent planning error is looking only at the destination.
Why transit matters
Driving to Europe means crossing several countries. In each one you need cover that stands in place of local compulsory insurance. If a transit country is excluded, you will be asked to buy local cover at the border — or refused entry.
Route planning
Write down the outbound and return routes separately; if you plan a different way home, add those countries too, and give the full list to your agency when the policy is issued.
Extending while abroad
If you realise the period will expire while you are away, ask your insurer whether it can be extended. Driving on an expired policy means being uninsured and exposed to local penalties.
Vehicle type
Tariffs differ for cars, minibuses, trucks and motorcycles. If you tow a caravan or trailer, it may need separate cover.
Frequently asked questions
Some country codes are struck through — what does that mean?
Cover does not apply in those countries. If they are on your route, ask for them to be included.
I am towing a trailer — do I need extra cover?
Usually yes. Mention it when the policy is issued so the trailer is covered.
