Accident Abroad: How the Green Card Claim Works
⏱ 2 min read
An accident abroad is stressful because of language and unfamiliar procedure. Knowing the steps speeds up settlement and reduces legal exposure in that country.
At the scene
- Secure the area; call emergency services if anyone is injured (112 across Europe).
- Call the local police — in many countries no claim can be opened without a police report.
- Collect the other party’s insurance details, plate number and contact information.
- Photograph the scene and both vehicles thoroughly.
- Give the other party a copy of your Green Card policy.
Who pays?
If you are at fault, the other party’s loss is handled through that country’s Green Card bureau, and ultimately borne by your Turkish insurer. If the other driver is at fault, your claim is pursued through the local system.
Back in Türkiye
Bring the police report, photographs and the other party’s details to your agency. Damage to your own vehicle is claimed under comprehensive cover with international extension, if you hold one.
The most common mistake
Leaving the scene without a police report. In most countries a private agreement is not sufficient for a claim.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to call the police abroad?
In most countries yes — without a police report the claim file may not be accepted.
What about damage to my own car?
The Green Card does not cover it. You need comprehensive cover with an international extension.
