Selling Your Car: What Happens to Your Insurance?
⏱ 2 min read
Selling a vehicle does not end with the notary transfer; policies must be updated too, or both your claims history and your liability may be affected.
Traffic insurance
Compulsory cover attaches to the vehicle. After the sale you can either transfer it to the new owner or cancel it and receive a pro-rata refund — but do it immediately.
Casco
Comprehensive cover is a personal contract and is normally cancelled on sale with a refund. If you buy another car, the policy can often be transferred on a pro-rata basis.
Claims history
The no-claims discount belongs to the person. If the policy is not updated on time, accidents caused by the new owner can appear in your record and raise future premiums.
Buying a new car
Compulsory cover must be in place before the vehicle is driven. When the policy is arranged through a dealer, always check the start date of cover.
Frequently asked questions
I sold my car — should I cancel the policy?
Either transfer it to the buyer or cancel it for a refund; do it immediately after the sale.
Can casco move to my new car?
Usually yes, on a pro-rata basis, with a premium adjustment for the difference in value and cover.
