Waiting Periods and Exclusions in Health Insurance

⏱ 2 min read

The most common disappointment in health insurance is discovering that a benefit you assumed existed is not payable. Two clauses explain nearly all such cases: waiting periods and exclusions.

What is a waiting period?

A defined period after the policy starts during which certain benefits are not yet active. It exists to prevent buying cover after a condition has already appeared. Premiums are paid during this time, but the specific benefit cannot be used.

Where it applies

  • Maternity: usually active only after a defined period.
  • Orthopaedic conditions: spinal and knee problems are frequently subject to waiting.
  • Certain planned operations: tonsils, sinus, varicose veins.
  • Dental and optical: when bought as add-ons, they may carry their own periods.

What is an exclusion?

Exclusions are never payable, no matter how long the policy runs: cosmetic procedures, undeclared pre-existing conditions, events under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and war or nuclear risks.

The declaration duty

If the medical declaration is incomplete or incorrect, the insurer may cancel the policy retrospectively at claim stage. Declaring an existing condition may raise the premium or add an exclusion — but omitting it risks the entire policy. Full disclosure is always the safer strategy.

Switching insurers

Ask whether waiting periods reset when you move. Some insurers recognise continuous prior cover; others start from zero. Moving purely for a lower premium can erase years of acquired rights.

Frequently asked questions

What if I fall ill during the waiting period?

That specific benefit is not yet payable. Other benefits not subject to waiting operate normally.

What if I do not declare a pre-existing condition?

If discovered at claim stage, the policy can be cancelled retrospectively and payments reclaimed. Full disclosure is safer.

Do waiting periods reset when I change insurer?

It depends on the insurer. Get written confirmation before switching.
