Maslak Traffic Insurance: Cover, No-Claims and What to Do After a Crash

⏱ 3 min read

The most common misunderstanding about traffic insurance in Türkiye is the belief that it covers your own vehicle. Compulsory motor third-party liability insurance covers material and bodily damage you cause to others. Damage to your own car requires comprehensive (casco) cover.

What it covers

Three areas: material damage to the other vehicle and property, bodily injury to third parties (treatment, permanent disability, loss of support), and legal defence within the policy scope. Limits are set by an annually published tariff; if damage exceeds the limit, the balance can be claimed from the vehicle owner.

Protecting your no-claims step

Every at-fault claim lowers your step and raises the next premium. For small single-vehicle damage, paying for the repair yourself can be cheaper over time. In an area with frequent minor contact damage, this calculation comes up often.

After an accident

  1. Move the vehicle to a safe spot and place the warning triangle — secondary collisions are a real risk on busy arteries.
  2. If anyone is injured, call 112 and do not move the vehicles.
  3. If there are no injuries and both parties agree, complete the joint accident report together and photograph both vehicles showing the point of impact.
  4. Send the report with your policy and registration details to your insurer or agency.
  5. Repairing at a contracted garage usually speeds up payment.

Renewal timing

If the policy is not renewed before expiry, the vehicle is uninsured: you face an administrative fine and personal liability for any damage caused in that window. Rather than relying on memory, ask your agency to track renewals.

Selling the vehicle

On sale, the policy is either transferred to the new owner or cancelled with a pro-rata refund. Failing to update it can mean the next owner’s accidents appear in your insurance history.

Frequently asked questions

Does traffic insurance pay for damage to my own car?

No. It covers damage you cause to others. Your own vehicle requires comprehensive (casco) cover.

Should I claim for small damage?

An at-fault claim lowers your no-claims step and raises future premiums. If the repair cost is low, paying yourself is often cheaper.

What happens if my policy lapses?

The vehicle is uninsured: an administrative fine applies and you are personally liable for damage caused during that period.
