Travel Health Insurance: What It Covers
⏱ 2 min read
Travel health insurance covers treatment costs arising from sudden illness or accident while abroad. It is mandatory, with a defined minimum limit, for Schengen visa applications.
Cover
- Emergency outpatient and inpatient treatment
- Emergency medication
- Medical transport and, if necessary, repatriation
- Emergency dental treatment (limited)
- Baggage loss and trip cancellation, as optional extensions
Exclusions
Routine treatment of pre-existing chronic conditions, planned surgery, cosmetic procedures and hazardous sports unless specifically added.
Visa limits
Schengen applications require a minimum sum insured and validity across the Schengen area. Policy dates must fully cover the travel dates; even a one-day gap can cause refusal.
Duration and multi-trip
Single-trip policies are issued per day; frequent travellers can buy annual multi-trip cover, which is usually more economical from about three trips a year.
The assistance line
The first number to call abroad is the assistance line printed on the policy. Going straight to a hospital and reporting afterwards can complicate settlement.
Frequently asked questions
What does a Schengen visa require?
