Complementary or Private Health Insurance? A Decision Guide
⏱ 2 min read
Both products make private healthcare affordable, but they work differently. The decision usually comes down to a single question: are the hospitals you want contracted with SGK?
Complementary health insurance
Pays the difference fee in SGK-contracted private hospitals. Lower premium, scope tied to what SGK defines, not valid where there is no SGK contract.
Private health insurance
Has its own hospital network with no SGK contract requirement. More flexible cover design — international treatment and specific physician choice can be added. Higher premium.
Decision table
- You want a specific doctor or a non-contracted hospital → private
- Nearby contracted hospitals meet your needs → complementary
- Budget is tight but you want protection → complementary, inpatient-only plan
- You want cover abroad → private, or a combination with travel health insurance
Can I switch later?
Moving from complementary to private cover triggers a new risk assessment; waiting periods and acquired rights may reset. Do not decide on premium alone.
Frequently asked questions
Can I hold both policies?
Technically yes, but it is usually unnecessary cost since they address largely the same risk. Compare networks first.
Why are complementary premiums lower?
Because SGK carries most of the risk; the policy only pays the difference fee.
