What does home insurance cover?
Home insurance protects both your home and your belongings against damage from fire, flood, water leaks, theft, vehicle impact and more — whether you own or rent. Compulsory earthquake insurance (DASK) only covers the building up to the DASK limits; home insurance can extend protection above that amount and against many other risks.
Typical covers
- Fire, lightning and explosion
- Theft and attempted theft, including bag snatching outside the home
- Flood and water damage
- Earthquake (optional)
- Household appliances and fixed installations such as boilers and air conditioners
- Storm and snow load
- Glass breakage
- Third-party liability
- Personal accident
Assistance services help with emergencies at home, such as sending a plumber, electrician, locksmith or glazier. Covers and limits depend on the plan you choose.
Evim and Lüks Evim plans
The home insurance we offer comes in two plans. Evim already includes a wide set of covers — among them theft of valuables and, when stated in the policy, cash and valuable documents. Lüks Evim adds covers for larger homes: machinery breakdown (generators, pool equipment), vehicles kept in a closed garage, landslide caused by nearby excavation, employer’s liability for domestic staff, liability for your pets and for a private lift, and minor electrical repairs. We compare the two plans for your home before you decide.
Covers people often overlook
- Partial damage: if a damaged tile or flooring cannot be matched in colour or pattern, the whole affected area can be replaced within the plan limits.
- Loss of rent: if an insured loss makes the home unusable, owners receive rent support for lost rent and tenants for rent already paid — for the reasonable repair period, up to 12 months.
- Legal protection: legal defence and court costs for disputes related to your home, for example between a landlord and a tenant.
- Food spoilage: food lost when an electrical fault damages your fridge or freezer.
- Moving costs: if an insured loss makes the building uninhabitable and you have to move temporarily.
Frequently asked questions
I rent my flat in Istanbul. Do I need home insurance?
It is not compulsory for tenants, but it is the only way to insure your own belongings and your liability to the landlord and neighbours, for example after a water leak. The building itself is insured by the owner.
I own the flat. Is DASK enough?
No. DASK only covers the building against earthquake up to its limit. Home insurance covers your belongings, other risks such as fire, water damage and theft, and — with the optional earthquake cover — the building value above the DASK limit.
What do you need for a quote?
The address, gross floor area, construction year and type of the building, whether you are the owner or a tenant, and the approximate value of your belongings.
