What is Green Card insurance?
The Green Card is an international motor insurance certificate. When you drive your Türkiye-registered vehicle abroad, it replaces the compulsory third-party motor insurance required in the country you visit.
It is valid in the member countries of the Green Card system. The system’s national bureau in Türkiye is the Motor Vehicle Bureau of Türkiye (TMTB). Almost all European countries and several neighbouring countries are members. The memberships of Russia and Belarus have been suspended since 30 June 2023, and that of Iran since 1 January 2024: the Green Card is not valid there, and you need to buy that country’s frontier (border) insurance when you enter. As memberships can change, we check that the countries you will visit are shown on your card when the policy is issued.
Who needs it and for which trips?
- Anyone driving their own car, motorcycle, camper or commercial vehicle outside Türkiye
- Holidays, business trips, road trips through the Balkans and Europe, visits to family abroad
- Journeys through several countries — the card is valid in all countries listed on it
You may be asked to show the Green Card at the border. Vehicles without a valid card may be required to buy temporary border insurance in the country they enter.
Cover and limitations
Covered: damage and injury you cause to third parties, under the compulsory motor insurance rules and limits of the country where the accident happens.
Not covered:
- Damage to your own vehicle — check separately whether your comprehensive policy (kasko) includes cover abroad
- Medical costs of the driver and passengers — travel health insurance is recommended
- Countries not listed on the card and dates outside the policy period
Duration options
The Green Card can be issued for short trips — for example 15 days or 1 month — and for longer periods up to 1 year. Duration options and prices vary by insurer, vehicle type and period.

Frequently asked questions
Is my Turkish traffic insurance valid abroad?
No. Your Turkish traffic insurance is not valid abroad — you need a Green Card. A valid Turkish traffic policy is also required when the Green Card is issued.
How long does it take?
With complete details the policy can usually be issued quickly. We still recommend applying before your travel date.
What should I do after an accident abroad?
Follow local rules, obtain an accident report or police report, give your Green Card details to the other party and inform your insurer. We will help you at every step.
Which countries are covered?
Only the countries shown on your card. For up-to-date membership information see the Motor Vehicle Bureau of Türkiye (TMTB) or ask us.
Where can I buy Green Card insurance?
From insurance companies that offer motor third-party liability insurance in Türkiye, or from their authorised agencies. You can get a quote and have your policy issued through our office in Maslak, by phone or on WhatsApp.
Sources: Motor Vehicle Bureau of Türkiye (tmtb.org.tr) and the Turkish Touring and Automobile Association (turing.tr), September 2026. Country coverage, duration options and conditions may change; we confirm the current details before your policy is issued.
